Human Rights/Victorian Charter
Alistair practises in the areas of commercial and public law. He is regularly briefed to advise and appear in trial and appellate proceedings across a broad range of areas, including corporations law, trade practices, class actions, constitutional law and human rights.
Prior to coming to the Bar, Alistair was a solicitor and senior associate in the litigation and dispute resolution group at Mallesons Stephen Jaques (now King & Wood Mallesons) from 1999 to 2005 and an associate to Justice Hayne, High Court of Australia, in 2001-2002.

proceedings brought by ASIC in relation to the Bank Bill Swap Rate (ASIC v ANZ Banking Group Ltd  FCA 1516);
acting for GE Lighting Australia in breach of contract and misleading or deceptive conduct proceedings against its former distributor;
acting for ASIC in proceedings involving misleading or deceptive conduct issues (Forrest v ASIC (2012) 247 CLR 486), financial services licensees (IMS FX Services Pty Ltd v ASIC  AATA 664) and managed investment schemes (Western Retirement Village Management Pty Ltd v ASIC  FCAFC 75);
securities and other class actions, including:
securities class actions against Billabong (Newstart 123 Pty Ltd v Billabong International Ltd  FCA 1194), Nufarm (Hadchiti v Nufarm Ltd  FCA 1524) and Bellamy’s;
the Manus Island class action; and
the Kilmore East-Kinglake and Murrindindi Black Saturday bushfire class actions;
various public law matters, including:
several proceedings in the High Court concerning the freedom of political communication;
acting for the Minister for the Enviroment in relation to a proposed extension of the Roe 8 Highway in Western Australia (Save Beeliar Wetlands Inc v Commissioner of Main Roads  FCA 4);
acting for the State of Victoria in the Royal Commission into Family Violence;
several proceedings involving the Victorian Charter, including Momcilovic v The Queen (2011) 245 CLR 1, Goode v Common Equity Housing Ltd  VSC 585; Kerrison v Melbourne City Council (2014) 228 FCR 87 (the Occupy Melbourne case); Victoria Police Toll Enforcement v Taha (2013) 49 VR 1; Director of Housing v Sudi (2011) 33 VR 559; and
O’Brien v Department of Treasury and Finance – FOI Officer  VCAT 1282.
Alistair is a reporter for the Commonwealth Law Reports, a contributing author to the Victorian Administrative Law service and the co-author of An Annotated Guide to the Victorian Charter of Human Rights and Responsibilities (2008, ThomsonReuters).
