Charles practises in commercial law and constitutional law.
He has experience in class actions and appeals. He has also acted as counsel assisting the Scrutiny of Acts and Regulations Committee of the Victorian Parliament on its Report on the Charter of Human Rights and Responsibilities Act 2006 (2011).
Prior to coming to the Bar, Charles was Associate to the Hon KM Hayne, then a justice of the High Court of Australia, practised as a solicitor in the litigation group at Freehills (now Herbert Smith Freehills) and lectured in property law at the Melbourne Law School. He has published widely and is the author of Sir William Stawell and the Victorian Constitution (Australian Scholarly Publishing, 2004) and Bills of Rights and Decolonization (Oxford University Press, 2007).
Charles studied law and history at the University of Melbourne and completed a doctorate at the University of Oxford on a Commonwealth Scholarship.
